Vancouver Golden Jubilee compact

Significance

This fashionable art deco style face powder and rouge compact is in its original box from local jeweller Firbank and Lange. The compact commemorated 50 years since the founding of the City of Vancouver. When Vancouver celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 1936, there were still many residents who remembered the rough settlement at Granville Townsite 50 years before. Construction of the new City Hall (also art deco style) at 12th and Cambie Street was creatively financed by Mayor Gerry McGeer who raised the funds by selling bonds to city residents.
